You're exactly right that there is no one to blame.
But I think you misdiagnose the problem as an idea, when instead, it's an eternal, universal phenomenon that's very hard to break.
One of the fundamental patterns of the universe is that power tends to aggregate.
Black holes pull more matter towards themselves and gain ever more gravity; a large tree keeps growing and blocking out more sun from the understory; empires gain more resources; rich people attract more money; and Medium writers with 1000 followers attract more followers at a faster rate than those with 10 followers.
The biggest reason why power accumulation is so out of control today isn't capitalism - it's globalization. Globalization is what allows the global elite to be soooo much more wealthy than the rest of us. And globalization itself is largely caused by our technological capacity to travel and communicate easily over large distances.
Obviously, technology provides some huge benefits, despite it's enabling of globalization and power accumulation. So eliminating technology probably isn't the answer, nor is it probably possible.
What I think might be the answer, is promoting technologies that, over the long term, tend to distribute or disperse power — rather than aggregate it.
For instance, solar panels on house roofs distributes energy production to individual households, rather than putting all the power (so to speak ;)) in energy companies. And vertical or hydroponic farming practices might allow food production to happen more locally, in any climate, so that communities can produce their own food, rather than shipping it in from faraway mega farms.
You haven't said so here, but a lot of people think capitalism is evil, but it's not. The only real evil in the world is suffering itself, and the only goodness is happiness. Power is merely the means by which suffering and happiness occur. Power itself is not evil, and neither is the tendency for power to accumulate. It is just a property of our universe.
But that said, the accumulation of power does make the universe less democratic. And a less democratic universe means fewer of it's constituents are able to successfully defend themselves against suffering. So I hope we can find ways of distributing power more locally instead of globally, in order to have a more democratic global community.
