You're cooperating on your (hopefully) shared goal of remaining a republic, rather than a dictatorship.

When it comes to maintaining a republic, you quite simply have to trust (or at least act like you trust) that your rivals will transfer back power when it is time. You literally can't be preemptive about it, because if you lose an election, but keep power by force, you have in fact created a dictatorship.

If you don't understand that, that doesn't make you more committed to stopping fascism, it makes you more of a fascist.
