Without having read the initial comment, this person's statement does seem like a category error.

That said, humans, although different in many ways, are also VERY predictable and similar in a lot of ways, which means science can oftentimes make very reliable predictions about what people will find pleasurable, painful, or beautiful.

Beauty is probably the least predictable of the three, but still predictable enough that people value each other's opinions whenseeking recommendations on places to visit, paintings to see, music to listen to, etc.

But the fact that science can in fact predict pleasure and pain pretty well means that science also can probably be said to have a lot to say about morality and well-being in general.

But of course science can never tell someone that they are in fact observing something beautiful or pleasurable when the person themself doesn't find it so. A person's own subjective perspective is the ultimate arbiter of what, to them, is beautiful, pleasurable, or painful.

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
