We never truly "understand" the world. Rather, we construct mental models to help us make predictions - that is all.

And the number one rule of building a mental / predictive model, is that you don't add complexity to it until the evidence forces you to. That is, you follow Occam's razor.

And when it comes to consciousness, there simply is no evidence available to the human perspective that would force us to provide predictions for where it is absent.

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
