Touching on your last paragraph here: the difference is that we know without a doubt that the universe exists.

That the universe exists is in fact the only one thing that any sentient being knows for a fact to be true. So you don't need to make an argument for positing it's existence.

For everything else, you need to say why you're positing its existence.

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
