The "explaining" and "controlling" are indeed entirely illusory, and so insofar as we think we can "explain" or "control" nature, our narrative about science is indeed entirely false, as you say.

But the "predicting" is exactly what it purports to be, and is exactly why science has allowed us to make functional technologies.

The only intellectual shift that needs to be made, is that, whenever we claim to "believe" or "know" or "explain" or “understand” some fact about the world, that we instead recognize that we've actually just learned to "predict" the world - at least reliably enough to be useful.

Whenever you hear someone say the words "explain", "know", "believe", or "control", or “understand”, just mentally swap in the word "predict", and you'll be on the right track.

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
