It seems like the things that truly sent capitalism off the rails were technology and globalization. Nowadays, the 1% source their wealth from across the globe, and then are able to use their globally sized resources to overpower their local, civic power structures.
So I wonder if the main reason capitalism is more out of control in America than in Europe, is simply because American hegemony post WWII afforded American businesses better access to and influence over global markets. Which ultimately gave American businesses lopsided influence over their own government.
Not really sure what the solution is though
