In a way, this represents a mentality of the real, underlying problem. Not that you didn't belong, but the notion that someone else might not have belonged.
Whether we choose our successful people based on skin color, parental legacy, or pure merit, there's still an underlying problem that we're leaving someone behind, for reasons that they couldn't control.
The real test of this nation, and humanity in general, is whether we can find a way to lift everyone up - certainly, regardless of race - but even regardless of aptitude. Any society that can't protect its weakest members is not really any better to live in than a society that doesn't protect its members based on any other criteria.
