I wrote a story arguing a similar point a few days ago (although much shorter). My basic stance is that some beliefs are based on evidence that we can witness together, while other beliefs are not.

Everyone - including atheists and folks of all religions - tend to believe the evidence we can all witness, but only religious folks believe the latter (and only the stuff that supports their own religion).

And while the former yields collaboration and communication among all people, the latter yields division among groups.

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
