I guess I don't really see a viable alternative.
I've been some sort of pan-psychist since long before I heard the term, but even if you believe there is more life / consciousness / intelligence in all the small spaces of the universe that we don't normally think about, there's still the question of how we would actually know how such things would like to be treated. Would a raindrop prefer to land on soft, fertile soil, or would it prefer to splatter on a hard metal roof?
Until we have some hypotheses on how we ought to act towards the so-called "inanimate" parts of the world, doesn't it make more sense to only prioritize the feelings of the things we have stronger intuitions about (e.g. ourselves and animals)?
