I agree with most of this. Humans are predictable like animals.

But I don't quite follow how it relates to my point about our desire to feel special serving as a cause for division. Can you explain?

To me, it seems like this:

  1. We want to feel special
  2. So we invent reasons to feel proud
  3. One such invention is pride in our group membership or culture
  4. This causes division, because we are drawing lines between groups and cultures

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
