Do you think you are more helpless or more complicit? Because to the extent that you are one, you are not the other.

I personally think that most claims of complicity are vaccuous, because they criminalize the small level of selfishness that is every human's basic right to pursue their own happiness.

If you claim that the British people are complicit with their political leadership, then you might just as well also claim that Palestinians are complicit in the stated genocidal goals of Hamas - which I don't think is a claim you're trying to make.

So can we please stop calling people "complicit" unless they have done something that is actually outside the realm of what we can expect from a normal human?

I think that's one of our biggest problems in public discourse: we criminalize people for not being superhuman. And so, rather than figuring out realistic ways to improve things, we just try to win the blame game.

I think most people argue for what they want to believe, rather than for what best describes reality. And I think that is very detrimental to us getting along.
