A good work ethic, or work itself, is obviously not an inherent virtue.
And yet, the act of doing a task tends to lend power to the one doing it.
If most people rely on a UBI, and don't do any work that other people rely on, that leaves a ton of power in the hands of the people who are doing something - such as those few people who are in charge of administering the UBI to everyone else. And those people may, at some point, ask themselves whether they really care if the UBI gets distributed properly.
I'm not exactly against UBI, but I am not particularly optimistic about it as a viable long term solution to any of humanity's historically unsolvable challenges.
The truly important first question that most people don't ask, is not how we fairly distribute wealth, but how we fairly distribute POWER - while producing enough goods and services to fulfill everyone's needs.
